Fan Art & Custom Creation contest

Eligibility

  1. Contestants are limited to one entry per person per contest.
  2. Contestants must notify POWER-CON/THUNDERCON at info@thepower-con.com about their intent to enter on or before Friday, August 24th, 2012. Both the Fan Art and Custom Creation contest must each receive a minimum of 10 entrants. Each contest not receiving the minimum number entrants via a notice of intent by the above deadline will be canceled and removed from programming.
  3. Contestants are required to fill out and submit this form along with their Fan Art and/or Custom Creation entry no later than 12:00 PM PST Saturday September 22nd, 2012 at the Registration table at the convention. Each contest not receiving the minimum number entrants via physical submission of the entry by the above deadline will be canceled.
  4. Entries will not be available for pick up until approximately 6:00 PM Saturday September 22nd, 2012. All figures must be picked up from the Registration table by 5:00 PM Sunday September 23rd, 2012. Unclaimed entries will not be returned to the contestant and become property of Power-Con, LLC.
  5. The competition will be hosted at the Torrance Marriott South Bay on Saturday September 22nd, 2012 in the panel room before the charity auction begins. Contestants have to be present to participate. All art and customs will be displayed near the Registration booth during the convention on Saturday; location at venue is subject to change.
  6. Individuals that have contributed to the current Masters of the Universe and ThunderCats brands in any way (such as, but not limited to, the creation of characters, comics, cartoons, scripts, figures or statues, or intellectual property) are not eligible to participate. In addition, past and current convention Staff members, Judges, and Coordinators are not eligible to participate in the current competition.

Guidelines

  1. Fan Art can be in the form of hand-drawn, painted, or digital created art. Custom Creations may be original sculpts or commercial toy products substantially modified with custom sculpted components.
  2. All entries must be original in concept and acceptable for a family friendly atmosphere. Nudity, depictions of lewd situations or extreme violence, vulgarity or other inappropriate text will disqualify the piece from competition.
  3. Submitted Fan Art entries do not have to be the original piece of art and can be a high resolution reproduction of the original piece. All reproduced art must be a minimum size of 8.5” x 11”. Contestants are encouraged to display original art if possible as it may give the entry an aesthetic advantage over a digitally reproduction. Submitted Custom Creations must be the original piece.
  4. All Custom Creations that require assembly are the responsibility of the contestant and must be assembled or set up prior to 12:00 PM Saturday September 22nd, 2012.
  5. Judging will be conducted over the course of the show by a group of judges appointed by Power-Con/ThunderCon. Winners will be announced in the panel room before the charity auction begins, Saturday September 22nd, 2012. All decisions are final.

Cosplay contest

Eligibility

  1. All are welcome to dress up and participate. Contestants 13 or under must have their parent’s or guardian’s permission to enroll, and must be accompanied by a legal guardian or relative of age at the show.
  2. Contestants can only submit one entry.
  3. The competition will be hosted at the Torrance Marriott South Bay on Saturday September 22nd, 2012. Contestants will get to strut their stuff starting at approximately 4:00pm Saturday September 22nd, 2012 in the panel room before the charity auction begins! Contestants must register ahead of time by submitting this completed form to the Registration table at Power-Con/ThunderCon between 10:00am and 3:30pm on Saturday September 22nd, 2012. Judging will be conducted and winners announced after the judging session.
  4. Individuals that have contributed to the current Masters of the Universe and ThunderCats brands in any way (such as, but not limited to, the creation of characters, comics, cartoons, scripts, figures or statues, or intellectual property) are not eligible to participate. In addition, past and current convention Staff members, Judges, and Coordinators are not eligible to participate in the current competition.

Guidelines

  1. Body coverage: The POWER-CON/THUNDER-CON is a family friendly convention and also has to adhere to the rules and regulations set forth by the Torrance Marriott South Bay and the city of Los Angeles. All costumes need to be tasteful and must cover at least a bikini bottom for males and full bikini for females. The use of latex paint, body paint, pasties, etc. are not considered adequate body coverage without additional body coverage worn over it. Thongs are not allowed unless covered by shorts or skirts.
  2. Costume Credit: All costumes must be made by the contestant or credited to the appropriate creator(s).
  3. Contestants can only enter once and not double up with other groups or individuals.
  4. POWER-CON/THUNDERCON reserves the right to refuse the entry of any prop or weapon it decides is unfit for the convention. All props or weapons must support the overall look of a costume or character. Wearing a prop or weapon for its own sake is not allowed. Misuse of a prop or weapon will result in immediate removal of the user from the convention. Any use of an item in an aggressive or threatening manner, regardless of intent, or any other activity thought to be unsafe in the view of POWER-CON/THUNDERCON s strictly forbidden and will result in immediate removal of the user from the convention.
  5. The use of metals, hard woods, and industrial plastics are not encouraged as these props or weapons can contain sharp or pointed edges and/or can result in an item that potentially too heavy. Any prop or weapon that may result in an injury to any individual due to sticking, cutting, dropping, pointing or touching the weapon in any fashion what so ever may be refused for entry by POWER-CON/THUNDERCON.
  6. Sharp edges on any prop or weapon are not permitted, and must be smoothed, filed, padded, or otherwise protected against any potential contact.
  7. Soft woods such as balsa, fir or layered cardboard are preferred choices for prop or weapon construction materials as they are neither heavy nor hard.
  8. The use of varnish, shellac, or any other coating to make a soft weapon have a hard exterior or sharp edge may result in a refusal of entry if the weapon is deemed unsafe due to any such treatment of its exterior. The definition of “hard” in this case is a hardness that exceeds that such as balsa, fir or layered cardboard.
  9. Materials that can shatter, such as glass or brittle plastics, are not permitted.
  10. Staves are acceptable as long as they are carried as a walking stick with one point on the ground. They may not be worn over the shoulder.
  11. Any real firearm that has the firing pin removed or barrel filled to make it unusable is still considered a dangerous weapon and is not allowed.
  12. Replica and futuristic firearms are allowed only if such weapon cannot be misconstrued to be a real firearm. A safety cap made of bright colored plastic (orange, red, yellow) may be placed over the end of the barrel and secured against removal. This includes any weapon that may be “fired” such as a homemade replica meant to duplicate a costume-related weapon that you are portraying. Water guns are allowed as a prop as long as it is not filled with water or any other fluid.
  13. Bows or other manual projectile replicas are allowed only if they are rendered incapable of firing a projectile. Airsoft weapons in any configuration are not allowed as props or weapons.
  14. Any weapon purchased in any exhibitor/retailer/vendor room at the convention must be wrapped before leaving the retailer’s table and then immediately taken to a room or car. Failure to do so may result in immediate removal of the user from the convention.
  15. Personal firearms, as permitted by the State of California for individuals with a valid and current license for a concealed handgun, are not allowed into any convention space regardless of reason. Any individual caught with such weapon in a convention space will result in removal of the user from the convention and/or being reported to local authorities.
  16. Any attendee under the age of 18 are not allowed to carry steel or hard wood weapons. Failure to observe this rule will result in removal of the attendee and his/her parents or guardians from the convention and/or being reported to local authorities.

Trivia contest

Eligibility

  1. Contestants are selected by random during the Masters Cast Mixer at the POWER-CON/THUNDERCON, hosted at Torrance Marriott South Bay on Saturday September 22nd, 2012.
  2. Each contestant must be present at the mixer in order to have a change to participate.
  3. Individuals that have contributed to the current Masters of the Universe and ThunderCats brands in any way (such as, but not limited to, the creation of characters, comics, cartoons, scripts, figures or statues, or intellectual property) are not eligible to participate. In addition, past and current convention Staff members, Judges, and Coordinators are not eligible to participate in the current competition.

Question Guidelines

  1. Questions are selected by the Power-Con/ThunderCon Staff and its associates and reviewed by respected fan historians and authorities in their field.
  2. Questions may be from the following categories:
    • Action Figures/Figures/Fashion Dolls/Stactions/Statues
    •  Bios on toys backs
    • Cartoons (Rankin/Bass, Warner Brothers, Filmation, Jetlag and Mike Young Production)
    • Comics and Mini Comics
    • Conceptual Art and Characters
    • Notable Creators

Officials

  1. Moderator: The moderator will be responsible for running the contest. He or she will ask the questions and designate contestants to answer. If the contestant wishes to challenge the moderator’s decision on the outcome of their participation, a judge will be contacted to render a final decision.
  2. Judges: In the event of a challenged question, a respected fan expert or historian will be called upon by the moderator to render a final decision. If such a person is not available, the moderator may turn to the crowd present at the Masters Cast Mixer to render a final decision.

Game Play

1) The Game

  1. Contestants will be approached by the moderator or they may approach the moderator themselves. Each contestant plays against themselves.
  2. The Moderator will have a pre-made set of questions. Each contestant will be asked one question.
    • If the answer is correct, the contestant is awarded one (1) prize ticket.
    • If no answer is given after ten (10) seconds, the Moderator will reread the question with answer and the contestant receives no prize.
    • If the answer is incorrect, the contestant receives no prize.
  3. A contestant or the moderator may call “timeout” for clarification of a rule or question, or to allow for an unexpected complication.
  4. If a contestant has successfully won a prize ticket, he or she may not participate for additional prizes.

2) Challenge of Questions and/or Answers

  1. Any challenges of questions or answers must be made by the contestant only at the time a particular incident occurs. The judges will consider the challenge; their decision will be final.
  2. The moderator and any judge may also challenge a question or answer.
  3. If a challenge of a question is sustained, the question will be discarded. No loss or gain of points will result.

Prizes

If a contestant receives a prize ticket, he or she will be allowed to exchange the ticket at the convention registration table by 4:00 PM PST on Sunday, September 23, 2012 for one (1) prize. The Prize selection is random and prizes available will be first come, first serve. Not all prizes may be equal in value. All winners are entitled to bragging rights for that year’s contest!
